Purpose

The purpose of my website is to create a compacted database that would list most of the 21st century European movies with a political, social, or cultural theme or motif that would show more of the specifics about the particular country producing the movie. In terms of the time period, I picked movies produced on or after 2000s. These movies that would present contemporary issues on the themes stated before: political, social or cultural.

Selection Criteria

• I chose to look at drama or documentary cinema productions of each European country. For some countries there was either no movie production (due to country size and incapacity to organize cinema production on a small territory) or there was a movie production but the movies that had no details in the English language. There was also the case where there were no relevant movies in the drama or documentary sections.
• In terms of the time period, the little movie selection contains movies produced in or after the year 2000.
• The movies selected on this web page do not necessarily represent the best movies of a particular country, but, from reviewing the summaries of the movies, offer the best representation of the realities of a particular country.

Selection shortages

• Movie summaries are posted by anonymous writers at times.
• Movie reviews are scarce in English, unless the movie gained international or wide-European acclaim and prizes.
• Details about movies are at times only found on public-created websites such as Wikipedia, this being the only source about the movie content.
• An ideal review of these movies invites a researcher to watch the movies himself/herself and then write his/her own review and summary, one obstacle in doing so is the different zone type of the DVDs, which are difficult to see outside the European zone.
